AND THE GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY GOES TO...
The weather was perfect as the sweet smell of smoke filled the air at the 17th Annual BBQ On The Bow Festival 2009, Canada’s Oldest Barbecue Competition and the Alberta Championships, held on Sept 5 & 6 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada at Eau Claire Festival Market Plaza in the heart of Calgary’s Downtown district.
It was a great battle for the 25 registered and championship teams making it through the two-day urban competition. On Sat, Sept 5, at the BBQ Sauce Competition sponsored by Canadian Club Whiskey and Chef’s Choice, anything goes sponsored by Barbecues Galore, 26 Judges of which included media, city and provincial officials, wine representatives and foodies selected the following winners in BBQ Sauce and Chef’s Choice. Team entries for chef’s choice were simply amazing this year and photos will be posted to our website.

The main day on Sun, Sept 6 opened with the spirit of the festival and the musical sounds of jazz and blues bands, Children Crafts Tent, General Store filled with BBQ Sauces, fresh corn, pesticide free tomatoes, spices and cookbooks for sale to the public. Other festival activities included competitors meat sampling booth, street vendors and arts displays, free cups of organic Kicking Horse coffee and Holy Smoke BBQ concession.
Debra L. Wong, Executive Producer stated, “In an effort to support Alberta Producers celebrity chefs grilled up their favorite recipes in the BBQ On The Bow Kitchen. Some of the dishes are simply amazing and it’s a great way to promote our Producers and Chefs”.
The Sunday wrapped up with the tabulation of the four meats competition headed by Bryan Maloney, PNWBA Head Judge, his trusty judging team and 45 local Judges awarding the “ The Alberta Championship “, Grand Champion Trophy and cash to Prairie Smoke n Spice, Rob and Jacy Reinhardt from Pilot Butte, Saskatchewan, Canada. They were also awarded the Dougall Trophy as the Top Canadian Team.
The Reserved Grand Champ winner went to Madcow Barbecue, Wayne and June Fettback from Langley, BC, Canada. Wayne and June were Grand Champs at BBQ On The Bow Festival in 2007 and 2008. Visit here for the 2009 final results
This year’s festival had amazingly wonderful warm weather and if you have ever been to Calgary you will understand how our weather can change from sun to snow at the drop of a hat. The 75 volunteers all looked great in their white t-shirts with the new blue and black BBQ On The Bow logo on the front with a trendy and fashionable tattoo designed heart on the back reflecting “ we love festival two thousand and nine”.

Summer’s last festival is ready to rock n roll and it’s sure to be the hottest if not the smokiest event in town as 23 BBQ Teams from across Canada battle it out for the title of the Grand Champion on the labour day weekend.
The 17th Annual BBQ On The Bow Festival will be held Sat, Sep 5 from 12:00 to 4:00 PM and Sun, Sep 6 from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM at Eau Claire Festival Market. It is Canada’s Oldest BBQ Competition and home of the “Alberta BBQ Championship”.
Two SMOKING HOT DAYS of activities. The Saturday kicks-off with team arrivals, BBQ Sauce Competition sponsored by Canadian Club Whiskey and Chef’s Choice sponsored by Barbecues Galores.
The main day on Sunday hosts live Main Stage Entertainment featuring Westwinds Concert band, Stampede Talent Search winners and headlines top Canadian blues musicians - Mike Clark Band and Johnny V Trio. Other activities on Sunday include the Alberta BBQ Championship, Children’s Craft Tent and Just Kidding Entertainers, Holy Smoke BBQ Food Pit & Kicking Horse Coffee Concession, Street Zone and the General Store featuring Alberta fresh corn & tomatoes, BBQ & Hot Sauces and cookbooks by local authors for sale to the public.

CALGARY, ALBERTA... What’s Canadian Club Whiskey got to do with BBQ On The Bow Festival. Well, it’s the first of a kind competition - Canadian Club Whiskey has signed on with BBQ On The Bow to sponsor the BBQ Sauce Competition to be held on Sat, Sept 5, 2009 as part of the two-day culinary BBQ competition at Eau Claire Festival Market.
Each of the competitors or BBQ Teams will be given a mini of the very best Canadian Club, 12 year old whiskey to be added to their made from scratch BBQ Sauce that will be tested and tasted by 24 Celebrity Judges from around town. Don’t miss this photo opportunity.

IT'S GETTING HOT, HOT, HOT FOR THE 17th BBQ ON THE BOW FESTIVAL
CALGARY, ALBERTA... BBQ On The Bow Society will host the 17th Annual BBQ On The Bow Festival, Saturday, September 5 ( 12:00 – 4:00 PM ) and Sunday, September 6, 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM ) at Eau Claire Festival Market. We are Canada's Oldest BBQ Competition and home of the Alberta BBQ Championships.
It's getting hot as 22 BBQ Teams from across Western Canada, BC, Washington and Texas get ready to battle it out at 17th Annual BBQ ON THE BOW Festival for the Alberta BBQ Championships, labour day weekend at Eau Claire Market in the heart of Calgary’s downtown.
Executive Producer, Debra Wong states "The teams this year are all experienced championship winners, so it's going to be a very serious competition. Our Grand Champion Winner, from 2008 and 2007, "Madcow BBQ", Wayne and June Fettback from Langley, B.C will be back to defend their title. But, be sure that the runner-up teams from last year - Rob Rakochey,"Pork, Sweat and Beers" and "Morley Hansen, “ Pigasus BBQ” and Mack & Sharon Yarbourgh, Texas, “Smoke n’ Ice will all be in the running battle for the 2009 title".
All teams will compete in all four categories of Pork Butt, Beef Brisket, Chicken and Pork Ribs on Sunday 12:00 to 4:00 PM. It will be a SMOKING HOT WEEKEND as over 48 qualified Judges decide the winners.
The line-up for the Sunday Main Stage Entertainment features - a community concert band, the Stampede Youth Talent Search winners and the smoky tunes of a local Blues Band and some very special guests.
Other activities include the Children's Craft Tent, a BBQ Food Pit & Kicking Horse Coffee Concession, the General Store featuring Alberta fresh corn, pesticide-free tomatoes, BBQ sauces and cookbooks for sale to the public and Street Zone with Vendors, Performing Art Groups and Displays located along Barclay Parade Road.
In an effort to support Alberta Producers celebrity chefs will be grilling up their favorite recipes in the BBQ On The Bow Kitchen from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. AB Chicken Producers, AB Lamb Producers, AB Pork Producers, AB Beef Producers, AB Turkey Producers will be on site handing out information and recipe cards.
