Stuffed Potato - BBQ ON THE BOW

You won't find any shrimp on these barbies, but that's hardly surprising in Cowtown. At BBQ on the Bow, the masters of slow-cooking pork butt, beef brisket, chicken and pork ribs (not seafood) are the ones who take home the trophies. But it might be argued that the people who come down to sample the food are the real winners.

Unlike the meat, the competition has grown tougher in the course of the last 18 years. Some 25 teams from across Canada and the U.S. battle for the Best in Alberta title and a chance to compete at the national barbecuing championships. "We have a lot of local veterans competing at the Bow," says Debra Wong, the event's executive producer, "but we also have teams that come all the way up from Texas just to show us what they can do--and you better believe last year's champions, Rob and Jacy Reinhardt from Saskatchewan, will be back to defend their title."

Beyond the meat-based competitions, BBQ on the Bow hosts two other original contests: Chef's Choice, in which the competitors serve up their signature dish, and the cutthroat Barbecue Sauce Competition. This year, the latter is presented in partnership with Big Rock Brewery, and while Wong is pleased to have a big-name sponsor on board, she is also looking forward to tasting the results. "All the sauces will have to incorporate a splash of Black Amber Ale," she says. "It's going to make for some nice, deep, dusty flavours."

If the competitive action is too hot for you to handle, there are plenty of other sights and sounds to keep you entertained. The General Store features local organic foods like corn, Paradise Hills pesticide-free tomatoes, Highwood Crossing cold-pressed canola oil, and, of course, a selection of local barbecue sauces for those who get inspired to take their grilling up a notch.

Wong also believes that "nothing goes better with barbecue than live blues music." (Try requesting "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.") There will also be a children's craft tent and a street zone along Barclay Parade where performing arts groups will be offering information about their fall offerings. It all means that foodies, families and barbecue enthusiasts alike are in for another finger-licking-good time.
